→ LEARN MORE: Pilgrims of Hope: 2025 Jubilee Year

This month, we took a tour of the building of our church, Our Lady of Mount Carmel. We described the church as holy—meaning, as set apart—and that it is different from other buildings we encounter, such as a school building or restaurant. The church is the dwelling place (the home) of God. When we view the Church as the home of God, it changes everything!

We spoke about the different parts of the church—narthex, baptismal font, altar, side altars, and so on—and what they represent. We learned that all of the artwork in the church helps us understand certain stories in the Bible and depicts the lives of the saints. All in all, every structure in the physical church building points us back to worship of God.

In case you didn’t know, this year (2025) is the Great Jubilee Year of Hope! Every 25 years, the Catholic Church celebrates what is called a Jubilee – a time where we give special time and attention to re-establish our relationship with God, with one another, and with all of Creation. This extraordinary year is marked by the Pope’s opening of the five “Holy” doors in St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City!

Pope Francis opened the Jubilee Doors on December 24th, 2024 to mark the beginning of the Jubilee Year.

The theme of this Jubilee Year is “Pilgrims of Hope,” and it is meant to be a year of hope for a world suffering the impacts of war and the ongoing effects of COVID-19 pandemic. The Jubilee of Hope will take place from Dec. 24, 2024 — Christmas Eve — to Jan. 6, 2026, the feast of the Epiphany.

Please learn more about this very special and important event here, and watch this video to learn more about what the Jubilee Year means for YOU!
