First Penance & First Eucharist

Children in the 2nd grade will have to opportunity to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Eucharist. Our preparation program is a 2-year process so your child must complete grade 1 before we begin the Preparation for the Sacraments.

The Sacrament Policies of the Archdiocese of Newark and OLMC:

Your family should be registered in the parish in which your child receives the Sacraments.

The Preparation for First Reconciliation and First Eucharist is a 2-year process. The children should complete Grade 1 in the Parish Faith Formation Program or the Catholic School, and then be currently enrolled in grade 2, while also completing the immediate preparation for the 2 Sacraments.

Preparation for the Sacrament of First Reconciliation: 

  • The parent will attend the Sacrament Information Meeting for First Reconciliation in October.
  • You and your child will attend 1 teaching session with the Parish Catechetical Leader prior to receiving the Sacrament of First Reconciliation.
  • The Celebration of First Reconciliation will take place on 2 different Saturdays in January/February. 
  • The schedule for all dates pertaining to the Sacraments will be released at the  parent meeting.

Preparation for the Sacrament of First Eucharist:

  • The parent will attend the Sacrament Information Meeting for First Eucharist in January.
  • The parent & child will attend 1 teaching session with the Parish Catechetical Leader prior to receiving the Sacrament of First Eucharist.
  • The parent & child will attend the First Eucharist Retreat in February/March.
  • The parent & child will attend the practice for the Sacrament on the designated day.
  • The celebration of First Eucharist will take place on Saturdays in April and May. 

Children 3rd grade and older:

Please contact the Faith Formation office if you have a child in 3rd grade or older. We have a special class (as part of the When Families Gather Program) each year for older children who will prepare to receive the Sacraments of Baptism and/or First Reconciliation and First Eucharist.
