Men's Cornerstone This is a 26-hours Parish-based retreat given by the men of the Parish for Christian men seeking a deeper relationship with God. It is an opportunity for men to grow spiritually and to build a kinship among other men through the common sharing of life experiences. This retreat is held in the Parish Center and is hosted by a core team of Cornerstone members. It also gives the candidates an intense faith experience through talks, small group discussions, and quiet reflective time. The sacraments of Reconciliation and Eucharist are celebrated as part of this special spiritual weekend.

Women's Cornerstone
This is 26-hour Parish-based retreat given by women of the Parish for women of the parish. It is both a religious and social experience. A core team meets for a year to plan and pray before giving a Cornerstone retreat. On the weekend itself, members listen to stories of faith, share meals, sleep on premises, and pray. Each participant has the opportunity to reflect on her own faith in both large and small groups as well as quietly with God. There are special sacramental celebrations of Reconciliation and a closing Eucharistic liturgy. Following the retreat, there are several opportunities throughout the year for women to remain connected to the Cornerstone community. Go to the next page (more) for dates and our new brochure. Baptismal Preparation
The Sacrament of Baptism is a time of great joy for our parish community. In preparation for the reception of this Sacrament by our children, instruction (called catechesis) is given to all parents. We encourage godparents to take advantage of this opportunity as well. The meetings are held at the home of a Baptismal Host couple and include a general catechesis on Baptism, and an overview of the liturgy of the sacrament. This meeting gives the parents an opportunity to come together to meet and share the joy of the occasion and to learn more about ongoing parish activities.

Altar Servers
The Sunday Eucharist is the high-point of our liturgical worship - it is an “extension” of the Easter celebration. When Christ the Lord was about to celebrate the Passover meal with his disciples and institute the sacrifice of His Body and Blood, he directed them to prepare a large room, arranged for the supper (Lk22:12). Our parish altar servers are a fine group of boys and girls (Grade 4 through high school) who generously give of their time in assisting the presider at Mass with special dignity and responsibility. They also find time during the year to learn more about the Mass and the Church, and help the parish prepare for Christmas and Easter. They make new friends and have organized outings and events. Practice sessions are offered when needs arise.

Emmaus Adult Faith Formation
Emmaus Adult Faith Formation is the umbrella name for much of the programming that happens in our parish to deepen the faith life of adults. The familiar gospel story of the disciples on the road to EMMAUS (Luke 24:13-35) models how Jesus communicated the good news. It involves listening, sharing the living word of God, trusting the capacity of prayer and sacrament to open eyes to the presence and love of Christ and inviting all to live and share this good news in the world. Adult faith formation is not exclusively about information although that is it in part. More commonly, however, it is about providing opportunities, within a faith context, for adults to be in conversation with other adults about things that really matter. The goal is transformation. At Mt. Carmel a core team of committed adults prayerfully plan for a multi faceted approach which include: retreats, yearly parish mission, small faith sharing groups, bible study, large group talks and presentations, small take home reflection booklets like Living Faith and the "little books", book discussion groups and many more community building events that enchance the faith life of the parish. Click on "read more" for a further description and schedule of upcoming events.

Little Rock Scripture Study
Little Rock Scripture Study is primarily a small group-based way of reading and of studying scripture. Groups meet for approximately 10 weeks in both the fall and the spring to study a particular book of the bible. Individuals read the assigned chapters and commentary on the content, and answer questions at home based on the text. At the weekly gathering, the sessions begin in prayer for a period of time followed by discussion of the material that has been studied. There is a wrap up video lecture by respected scripture scholars. There is a cost to cover materials and for child care which is offered during the sessions.

Marriage Preparation
The Marriage Preparation program emphasizes preparation for the spiritual reality of the sacrament of marriage. However, far from being a theoretical reflection on marriage, this spiritual dimension is discussed through the lived experiences of married couples that share stories of their marriage and their lives that show God’s presence and love. Specific talks are given on: the transition from single life to married life; sexuality; responsible parenthood; and the mission of the family. Witness talks are followed by some quiet reflection by the engaged couple. The sessions conclude with a catechesis on the subjects that often incorporate important church teaching from the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Humanae Vitae, or Pope John Paul II’s The Theology of the Body. Each course concludes with a Mass and dinner.
The next Marriage Preparation program will run on the following dates:
Friday Sept. 11 2009 7:30PM
Friday Sept. 18 2009 7:30PM
Friday Sept. 25 2009 7:30PM
Sunday Sept. 27 2009 4:40PM
There are a total of four sessions, couples need to attend all of them.
Please come to the first session on Sept. 11th at 7:15PM so that we can take your information and register you. Thank you.

Neo-Catechumenal Way
Neo-Catechumenal Communities: These communities present a person with an opportunity to discover or rediscover his or her Christian identity. Starting with a series of catechesis for adults and youth over age 13, they bring forth a discovery of the fruits of baptism and a way to continue on an active journey of faith. In the words of Pope John Paul II, the Neo-Catechumenal Way is “an itinerary of catholic formation valid for our society and for our times.” Catecheses are given approximately once each year and are pre-announced at all masses and in the parish bulletin. Signs and cards are also placed around the church when a catechesis is about to commence. all are welcome to listen to the catecheses regardless of personal life situations. Baptized or non-baptized, practicing or non-practicing, Catholic or non-Catholic - all are encouraged to come and listen.

Eva's Kitchen/Paterson
Eva’s Kitchen, Paterson, began 21 years ago serving a hot meal, seven days a week, providing take-out for later. Mt. Carmel has been involved through their Parishioners and the Catholic Daughters of America, OLMC Court #1712 since its inception. The number of people relying on soup kitchens is alarming, but they can be helped by those of us with the ability to make a difference. Eva’s Kitchen is now Eva’s Village with programs to feed, shelter and rehabilitate persons of all races and creeds. But it begins in the kitchen with a hot meal and we are there to help.

Peace and Justice
The purpose of the Peace and Justice Ministry at Mt. Carmel is threefold: to pray, to educate and to advocate. Social justice is a call that comes to us through scripture and the life of Christ. We find our focus through prayer and discernment, where we at Mt. Carmel can best effect social justice. Using the expertise of the broader Catholic community and those involved locally in justice on a day-to-day basis, we continue to educate ourselves through discussions with practitioners. Through prayer and knowledge we can, as a community, advocate for the rights of those who are marginalized in our community, the nation and the world. The grouop meets as needed but keeps in communication through email each week.

Liturgy of the Word with Children
Twice monthly 9:30AM Sunday Mass. Families who attend the 9:30AM Mass on Sunday are invited to have their children attend the special Liturgy of the Word with Children held in the Parish Center. After the Opening Prayer at Mass, the children are escorted to the Parish Center where a committed team of families conduct the Liturgy of the Word using the Children’s Lectionary. The children hear the readings on their level and discuss their meaning with an adult presider. The children are led in song and prayerful response. All return to the main assembly after the Homily.

Renew/Small Christian Communities
This program offers weekly or seasonal small group sharing in a process of prayer and reflection. Renew has been in existence since the 1970's and is a world-wide evangelization effort to renew faith with increased vigor. It is an opportunity to meet with others to share our stories, reflect on scripture, discover God’s presence in the ordinary events and relationships of our lives and find inspiration. At Mt. Carmel the Why Catholic? process based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church has recently been the primary resource used. Longing for the Holy a 12 week process based on the work of Fr. Ronald Rolheiser is the newest resource available. Please use the contact information below if you are interested.

If you have any questions about a particular volunteer job, call the office and ask. We will be glad to explain what the activities involve. • Service Requirement—as part of our Christian lifestyle, we ask that all students participate in two service activities a year. Classes may work on a group project. • Church Attendance—the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass is when families gather for the Liturgy of the Word with children. Parents are encouraged to use their gifts and talents in leading the children in reflecting on the scriptures. Grade-level liturgies are held once a month at this Mass. • Serve on the Altar?—Father Tom Quinn (201-444-2000 x203) is in charge of the altar servers. Many children enjoy taking an active part in the Mass, and it increases their understanding of the service as well.

The PEA Ministry is responsible for: constant recruitment of Adorers (people who adore the Eucharist), coverage (scheduled adorer every hour), holding of events, gathering the adorers for fellowship (Christmas gathering and PEA anniversary celebrations), as well as for education or deepening of faith, for helping coordinate the Procession of the Holy Eucharist on the feast of Corpus Christi and for supporting Parish events such as the block party.

Health Ministry
Continues the healing ministry of Jesus and promotes the well-being of the whole person - body, mind, and spirit. Volunteer registered nurses provide health counseling, wellness education, screenings for blood pressure and other essential health care services. This ministry also provides resource persons for educational seminars and acts as a liaison for community services. There is no direct nursing care involved although parish nurses utilize their skills and expertise to guide parishioners through the medical maze while offering the spiritual component often absent in the health care system. Parishioners with or without health related backgrounds are welcomed.

Lazarus Team
Volunteers from the parish help during the time of grief and loss of a loved one. Home visitation with the bereaved family to plan a Funeral Liturgy, provide Acolytes and Readers during the Mass and perhaps arrange a post-funeral reception with the help of our Martha’s Ministry volunteers are aspects of this ministry. This wonderful and personal outreach, at a very difficult time, can be a source of Christ’s healing process. Each November, the parish has a “Mass of Remembrance” to honor all those that have died in the course of that year.

The Rosary is recited immediately following the funeral mass. Living members are also remembered at a Mass annually.
