Fr. Ron's Blog

Dear Friends,
A very short column this week.
You may or may not remember this phrase – The Cooperative Mission Appeal. Years ago, any Missionary Society could approach any parish, or as many parishes as they wanted to, and ask to make an appeal on behalf of their missionary work. It was difficult for any pastor to decide how many to allow in a particular parish and the societies with more members could ask more parishes to be able to make an appeal...

Some years ago, the Conference of Bishops decided to try to bring some order into this process by establishing the Cooperative Mission Appeal, assigning particular missionary societies to particular dioceses, which would then assign the society to a particular parish. This is why, generally speaking, there is only one appeal in each parish every year.

This year, the Cooperative Mission Appeal will be held here at Mount Carmel this weekend. Fr. Jim Elmore will preach at all the masses on behalf of the Passionist Missionaries of Papua New Guinea. Fr. Elmore has worked for many years with the indigenous people of Australia, as well as the Missions of Papua New Guinea. A second collection, for the Mission Appeal, will follow immediately after the regular collection. This is the one and only time there is an actual, in-pew, second collection here at OLMC. I ask you to be open to his message and to be as generous as possible in your response.

God Bless,
Fr. Ron
