WINDOW OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

HolySpiritWindow1

LOCATION: St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
ARTIST: Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680)

The Window of the Holy Spirit, represented by the dove, was the "final touch" Bernini used to complete his Chair of St. Peter located in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.

The window, which is NOT made of glass but instead thin pieces of alabaster stone.

The window is above the Chair of St. Peter, the chair only the pope is permitted to sit in. It was to remind everyone that when to pope is seated below, it is the Holy Spirit that inspires all that the pope says.

Bernini also designed the window to be in the center of his sculpture which surrounds the chair. He wanted a person looking at the window to feel as if they were looking to the window of Heaven with clouds, angels and light rays coming from it.
