7-5 Scripture

“And Mary said, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it unto me according to thy word.”
And the angel departed from her.” (Luke 1:38)

This may be a verse you have heard before or maybe it is new to you. We hear it frequently during Christmas week and Advent. It may seem insignificant or confusing, but it is one of the most important sentences ever uttered in scripture. Here, Mary is agreeing to be a major player in God's big plan! She is allowing God to save His people through her! Mary made such a brave choice in saying "yes", by appearing pregnant outside of wedlock, Mary could have been killed. This must have been such a difficult decision for her!

This verse presents a very real challenge to us as Christians. At some point in time, whether now or later, God will ask us to do something we are scared of. We will be pushed by the Holy Spirit to make a decision that is difficult. We will worry about what people may think of us, or how we will ever accomplish our goal. In those moments, we can take Mary as our role model, and say yes to God’s plan for our lives, just like she did, even if it is a little scary at first.
