LOCATION: St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City
ARTIST: Michelangelo (1475-1564)

Michelangelo's "The Pieta" (Italian for "Pity") is probably the world's most famous religious sculpture in the world. Carved when he was twenty four years old, it is also the only sculpture Michelangelo ever signed.

Michelangelo was commissioned by Cardinal Jean Bilheres de Lagraulas to sculpt the Virgin May holding her dead son, which would be placed on the cardinal's burial site. He stared the work in November of 1498 and needed it completed by 1500 for the Jubilee Year.

Shortly after completing the statue in 1500 Cardinal Bilheres died.

The statue's location has been changed and given a prominent spot a the front entrance of St. Peter's Basilica and even traveled to the United States in 1964 for the New York World's Fair.

Interesting Video Clips:
The Pieta - Watch modern sculptures make a replica of "The Pieta". Notice the tools they are using. Michelangelo only had chisels and mallets!
