ART OF THE MONTH

CHRIST THE REDEEMER
Christ the Redeemer Statue

LOCATION: Tijuca Forest National Park, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
ARTIST: Heitor de Silva Costa - Designer & Paul Landowski - Sculpture

Construction on this statue began in 1922 and was not completed until 1931. Located in the Tijuca Forest National Park at the top of Corcovado Mountain, this giant statue of Jesus looks down over the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

This statue is considered the largest art deco statue in the world measuring 96ft tall (and add an additional 26ft for the base it stands on). The arms stretch out an amazing 92ft!

The people of Rio de Janeiro could not decide whether to make the monument a statue of Christ or a giant cross. The compromise was a giant statue of Christ with his arms stretched out in the form of a cross.

The cost of building this statue was $250,000 in the 1920's. Today's cost to build this statue made of concrete and soapstone would be $3,300,000.
