bookofkells

LOCATION: Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland Artist: Celtic Monks

Regarded as Ireland's finest national treasure, the Book of Kells is a hand-written and drawn manuscript of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It contains all four Gospel versions - Matthew, Mark, Luke and John and is written in Latin.

The book is also known as the Book of Columba, after St. Columba, the founder of monasteries in Ireland. The illustrations and ornamentation far surpass that of any other for their complexity and extravagance. The use of vibrant colors, Celtic symbols, images of humans, animals and mythical beasts enliven the pages.

It gets its name for the Abbey of Kells where it was housed for centuries. Today, it is on permanent display at the Trinity College Library in Dublin Ireland.
