Religious Ed

Our Lady of Mount Carmel offers religious education formation for children registered in grade 1st to 8th grade in September 2010.  Confirmation is celebrated in the 9th grade; please contact Youth Ministry at 201-444-9302 for more information about this program.

The Religious Education Formation program welcomes children and their families from 1st to 8th grade.  This program helps children and their parent(s) build a relationship with God and realize the importance of loving one’s neighbor.  The program provides an atmosphere where children and parents are invited to learn and live each day with loving Christian Values.  Through this program children and their parents increase their knowledge and understanding of the Catholic tradition.  Class sessions are held once a week (Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).  Other models of religious education include Home Groups, Summer Program, and When Families Gather.

Home Based Classes
Home Groups—many families throughout the parish establish Home groups for religious education to experience the wisdom of faith in a home setting.  These groups are convenient for families and give the youth an opportunity to participate in a smaller group.  Home groups are established by the catechist and meet once a week.  There is a five(5) person minimum for each Home group.  If you are interested in establishing a Home group, please contact Marie Cummings, Parish Catechetical Assistant, to receive approval for the Home group no later than May 1, 2010.

When Families Gather (WFG)
When Families Gather (WFG) — this model welcomes families of all shapes and sizes who desire to grow in the wisdom of their faith and deepen their spirituality in a family setting.  At home the parents teach two chapters from Faith First.  These chapters are then presented at a monthly WFG meeting. Families come together once a month on a Monday evening beginning at 6:30 PM with pizza in the parish center, continuing until 8:30 PM or once a month on Sunday, beginning at 10:30 AM with bagels in the parish center continuing until 12:00 noon.  The program will explore what we believe as Catholic Christians and how to live out those beliefs in our everyday family lives.  When Families Gather affirms and strengthens families as the “Church of the Home”.  Registration deadline for WFG program is April 15, 2010.

Summer Religious Education Program
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Summer Religious Education is for children registered in grade levels 3 through 8 in September 2010.  The summer program is an intensive Religious Education experience that runs for 9 days.  The dates for the summer program are June 28th through July 9th from 2:00 PM until 5:15 PM with no class on July 5th.  Each day the children will experience a lesson taught by their catechist, a music session, an activity to process the lesson and a prayer service based on the lesson.  Children will attend the grade they are entering in the fall.  Program includes two additional mandatory sessions during the year—an Advent session and a Lenten session.  Parents of the children who participate in this program must volunteer for 2 full days during the nine day program.  Catechists are parent volunteers and teach the full nine days.  Registration for this program ends on April 15th, 2010.  No one will be accepted for the summer program after this date.  Every child must attend all nine sessions for the full three hour class.

Special Notes

• Parental Participation—Parents are asked to volunteer in some aspect of the program.  Many opportunities exist, as outlined on the registration form.  If you have any questions about a particular volunteer job, call the office and ask.  We will be glad to explain what the activities involve.

• Service Requirement—as part of our Christian lifestyle, we ask that all students participate in two service activities a year.  Classes may work on a group project.

• Church Attendance—the 9:30 AM Sunday Mass is when families gather for the Liturgy of the Word with children.  Parents are encouraged to use their gifts and talents in leading the children in reflecting on the scriptures.  Grade-level liturgies are held once a month at this Mass.

Kids:  Would you like to…

• Serve on the Altar?—Father Tom Quinn (201-444-2000 x203) is in charge of the altar servers.  Many children enjoy taking an active part in the Mass, and it increases their understanding of the service as well.
• Children’s Choir—Grades 3 and up meet Tuesday afternoons from 5:00 to 5:45 PM.
